Veterans Day Tribute

Marines_0026-1

Veterans Day is a time to honor the United States armed forces. To acknowledge the selfless sacrifices of those who fought in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq. To say thank you to the men and women who answered the call to serve and protect our nation. It is because of you that I am proud to be an American citizen.

“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty.”

President John F. Kennedy

Special Acknowledgments

Bro Warren Hackett (August 30, 1920 – October 25, 2003), Thank you for sharing your experiences in WWII with me. That was the best history lesson I have ever had. You will never be forgotten.

I first set foot on the shores of Waikīkī and the Kona coast in October 1999.  I attended the Ironman Triathlon (now called the Ironman World Championship) in Kailua Kona on the Big Island and vacationed afterwards.  I left vowing to one day return to this place of serenity that swept my heart away.  Atlas I did, but this time I ventured out onto the Garden Island of Kauaʻi. It was indeed a remarkable journey that I will never forget.  A hui hou kākou  (until we meet again)!!!

Live @ the FM

 FM5

On October 24th, I had the privilege of celebrating my birthday by performing with one of my favorite bands, the Fish Market’s House Band. This band is composed of some of the most talented musicians around. They include my bass teacher/mentor Walter Cosby, Stanley Cooper – MD/guitar, Moe Daniels – keyboards, Edward “Junie” Henderson – vocals/percussion and Tim Steele – drums. This was my first public performance on bass and with a band. I was honored to have the opportunity to play with musicians who have performed with artists such as Marcus Miller, Lalah Hathaway, Angela Bofill, Maysa, Najee, and Ledisi (I actually got stage fright two weeks before). It was definitely one of my most memorable experiences; and being able to share that moment with family and friends was priceless. Many thanks again to Walter “Iceman” Cosby, the House Band & my Family/Friends!!!

Dad’s Birthday Celebration

On August 2nd my dad celebrated his 72nd birthday. I didn’t realize it was fast approaching until I saw it mentioned on Facebook as one of the birthdays of the week. The next day I decided to plan a dinner and invite a few friends to surprise him. I wanted to take him to The Fish Market Restaurant so he could hear one of my favorite bands. There were a few minor glitches before and during the big event but everything worked out and he had a great time.

Many thanks to our friends and family that contributed to making this a memorable day for him.
The Martins, Betty Jean, Tracie & Greg, Denise, Fariba, Angela, Joel and Earl.

Happy Birthday to my sister Melodie who also celebrated a birthday on August 2nd!!!

The Marine Barracks at 8th & I Streets in Washington, DC was established in
1801 and is the oldest post in the United States Marine Corps. The Barracks is
home to many nationally recognized units, including the “President’s
Own” Marine Band, the “Commandant’s Own” Drum and Bugle Corps,
the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon,  the official Marine Corps Color
Guard, and the Marine Corps Body Bearers.

Having ambitions of joining the Corps in high school; the Marine Barracks and
Iwo Jima eventually became my favorite hang outs. However, my admiration for
the Marines began on October 23, 1983; my 14th birthday and the
bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. There were 220 Marines
killed along with 18 Navy and 3 Army servicemen from the United States.

This year I decided to celebrate the 4th of July by attending the Evening
Parade. It has been more than ten years since the last time I was there. I
still get excited with anticipation and as always, they never cease to amaze.

Portraits of My Mother

momblog_0013-1.JPG

When I started learning to shoot portraits, my mom was one of my top models.  She was always willing to make time to strike a pose for me. After she chose which outfits to wear, I would style her hair and then the fun commenced. There were a lot of trials and errors as you will see in the photos (lighting, shadows, etc). I also went through a lot of film. However, looking back I wouldn’t change a thing.

In addition to being a loving mother, grandmother, wife and teacher; she wore a number of other hats as well. Including one I refer to as a pose director. If my mom saw that something wasn’t being done properly; she didn’t hesitate to step in and make corrections. During a photo shoot she noticed that the person wasn’t posing very well, or shall I say “working it”. So she showed them what to do. After that I decided to officially designate her as my pose director/assistant.

There were also numerous shoots of my parents together, as my dad was not camera shy either.

My Nephew’s Graduation

My 1st nephew/godson Justin graduated from high school on June 8th in Texarkana, Texas. For those who aren’t familiar with the city it lies between two states, Arkansas and Texas. After landing and disembarking from the Embraer 170/175 roller coaster ride, we began the two hour journey from Little Rock Arkansas to Texarkana. This was my second trip there; the first being in 2010 when my sister received her master’s degree. Having spent three years of my childhood in Pine Bluff, Arkansas; returning to state once again brought back fond memories. However, the memory I will treasure the most now is seeing my nephew graduate. He is no longer my little Lookie Lou but a young man that I am very proud of.

BassBreak Live 2013!!!

Buying My First BassBuying My First BassBassBreak 2012The Fish MarketBassBreak 2012The Fish Market Ram's Head On Stage

On May 11th I attended my second BassBreak Live event in Dover, Delaware. It is a music workshop for bass players founded by bassist /instructor Jamaal Cubbage. I started learning to play bass in 2011 and attended my first BassBreak Live in 2012.  Before the workshop I was in the midst of an eight month hiatus from picking up my bass. After returning home I was motivated to resume my lessons and practicing.

Playing a musical instrument has always been a part of my life since childhood. However, after my mom passed I wasn’t sure if I wanted  to continue.  During that time I was advised by a friend/bassist, “to keep playing because music will help me fly away from this world”. Perhaps he was right…… Music does have a way of healing and bringing a sense of serenity.

Warm Springs Ranch (home of the Budweiser Clydesdales)/St. Louis

Here comes the king of beers! For many years I have loved the world renowned Anheuser-Busch Budweiser Clydesdale draft horses. I am sure many of you have seen them in their famous commercials. The first time that I had the opportunity to see them live was at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1995. After viewing the Super Bowl commercial this year, I decided to research the ranch where they were supposedly bred and raised. To my amazement, not only did such a place exist but they also offered tours. A two hour drive from St. Louis, Missouri in a town called Booneville is where Warm Springs ranch is located. So I planned a weekend getaway with two of my girlfriends (Leah & Angie).

We arrived to a wet and cold St. Louis and had to cancel two of the excursions on our itinerary. The Journey to the Top tour took us to the top of the Gateway Arch. It is 630 feet and currently the tallest monument in the United States. The next day featured the much anticipated tour of the ranch. We missed our scheduled riverboat sightseeing tour due to mechanical issues with our rental. However, we made it to the Missouri Botanical Garden for a brief visit. Afterwards we headed out for the road trip to Warm Springs ranch. As we passed by the pastures with grazing horses I started screaming with excitement!  We received a welcoming greeting at the front gate upon our arrival and continued on to the stables to join our tour group. At last I made it to the “home” of the world famous Clydesdales!!!
